San Francisco, CA - On Saturday, May 2, 2009, John Pence Gallery, 750 Post Street , near Union Square in San Francisco, will open an exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Jacob Collins, one of the foremost artists and educators in the U.S. today. John Pence Gallery has represented Jacob Collins since 1995. The gallery will host a reception to honor the artist from 5:00 to 8:00 on opening day and the exhibition will continue on view through May 30, 2009.

This will be his sixth one-man show with Pence and he has participated regularly in a myriad of Group Shows and Theme shows for seventeen years.  Collins is one of a handful of singularly important American artists who have been involved with the resurgence of the American Realist Movement.  His exhibitions have become legend across the country, the press has embraced him as an inspiring leader and brilliant artist, he has founded three important teaching institutions – namely the Water Street Atelier, The Grand Central Academy of Art, and the Hudson River School for Landscape – all of which operate in and around New York City.  These schools have turned out some of the finest young artists working in America today – many who are represented by John Pence Gallery.

He is a member of several honorary art organizations, serves on Boards and Advisory Councils of prestigious art organizations and publications, and has taught at the New York Academy of Art and the National Academy of Design in New York City. While still in his mid –forties, his breadth of experience and list of accomplishments can be favorably compared to American Masters in the late stages of laudable careers.

This exhibition will feature a wide array of Collins’ talents; including monumental male and female nudes, still lifes, portraits, interiors, florals, plein air landscapes and drawings. His palette is exuberant and breathtaking, his compositions are brilliant, his subject matter is current yet steeped in the rich traditions of centuries-old academic realism, the textures are challenging and executed with sureness and tastefulness, and the end results are unique and highly successful.  Collins’ dedication to beauty in art is boundless and he has inspired legions of young painters to return to the roots of good painting.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 PM and on Saturday, the gallery is open from 10 to 5 PM.  Special viewing appointments and additional gallery services are available by calling the gallery at 415-441-1138, or emailing the gallery at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
