artwork: Yue Luping Immaterial ViewsShanghai, China - Islands6 Gallery presents Yue Luping (China), Anna Boggon (UK), Lu Chunsheng (China) and David Cotterrell (UK) show new glass, installation, video and live works. On exhibit until 4 October, 2006.

All of the participating artists have traveled and spent extended periods of time in unfamiliar environments – 2 to England and 2 to China.  Less Travelled is a bundle of creative responses to new and unfamiliar environments.

Yue Luping shows Immaterial Views: reflections of the 4 year Far People Project on being an outsider.  He presents a live TV recording studio, broadcasting 6 different channels, which reflects on the universal condition of being a far person.

Anna Boggon shows Imminent – an old Chinese kitchen cupboard is suspended near a window.  Hidden within is a scene, which is an expression of a transitory moment viewed by means of a periscope.  The old encases the new: relocation is imminent, overhanging.

Lu Chunseng’s 29-minute narrative movie The History of Chemistry imagines the unsettling unknown within a group of people - like yellow fumes rising from the alchemist’s crucible. To gain time is to move as slowly as possible. Through artificial representation the underlying feeling will surface. The piece has no end and therefore no conclusion.

David Cotterrell’s South Facing is an entire city of ‘filler’ blocks - 750 miniature towers, each between 25 and 35 storeys and each capable of housing 750 people.  Demand outstrips time – within most new developments filler’ blocks are pressed into service from standard catalogue designs.  This suburban utopia houses half a million souls in search of a centre.
