HOUSTON, TX - Cupid visits the Cretaceous this year as the Houston Museum of Natural Science celebrates Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate with a sweetheart or it’s just time to find someone special, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has plenty of romance-ready events. Originally thought to have been made by the sailors themselves, it is now known that these special valentines were commissioned from Barbados island natives.
On Feb. 9, from 6 – 10 p.m., flirt between the fossils at Lovebugs, a new Mixers, Elixirs and IMAX®-style event. Enjoy live jazz, swing and pop music from David Caceres, free appetizers and a cash bar in the Hall of Paleontology. An IMAX® film is included. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $13 for members.
Beginning Feb. 10, discover 19th century methods of looking for love. Sailor’s Valentines showcases the inventive way seafarers of the 1800s communicated their love to far-off sweethearts. Colorful Caribbean shells were arranged into beautiful geometric patterns, which served as a background for a sailor’s message. Examine these beautiful love letters, with their heartfelt messages of “Home Sweet Home,” “Think of Me,” and “With Love.”
This exhibition is included in general admission to the Museum, which includes nine permanent exhibit halls; an outstanding science museum has a spectacular collection of mineral specimens, a dinosaur skeleton, space-station models, a planetarium, IMAX theater and a six-story butterfly center in which these beautiful creatures land delicately on outstretched arms.
