Luce Foundation Awards VMFA $200,000 For New American Installation

Richmond, VA - The Henry Luce Foundation has awarded a $200,000 grant to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for reinstalling and reinterpreting its collection of historical American art—from painting, sculpture and works on paper to the decorative arts of furniture, silver, glass and ceramics. The largest amount of the permanent-collection gallery space in a new wing—approximately 11,200 square feet—will be devoted to the exhibition of VMFA’s current American collection, more than doubling its previous footprint.

Sotheby's Sale of Contemporary Art to Feature Works by Indian Contemporary Artists

LONDON - Indian artists such as Subodh Gupta (b. 1964), Bharti Kher (b. 1969), Anish Kapoor (b. 1954), Raqib Shaw (b. 1974) and T.V. Santhosh (b. 1968) are an ever-growing force in Sotheby’s international sales of Contemporary Art – in addition to the company’s regular dedicated sales of Indian Art – and this summer’s major series of Contemporary Art sales in London will see this trend gather further momentum still. The sales on Tuesday, July 1 and Wednesday, July 2, 2008, will present a total of eight works by these cutting-edge and highly sought-after names and together the works are estimated in excess of £2 million.

Luisa Rabbia: Travels with Isabella, Travel Scrapbooks 1883/2008

Boston, MA - During her residency at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 2007, artist Luisa Rabbia was inspired by photographs Isabella Gardner collected and pasted into elaborate travel scrapbooks while traveling in China in 1883. The Italian-born, New York-based artist returns to the Gardner Museum this summer to present a new contemporary exhibition: Luisa Rabbia: Travels with Isabella, Travel Scrapbooks 1883/2008, on view June 27 through September 28, 2008.

Christie's in London Sells Monet Masterpiece for $ 80.5 Million A Record for the Artist

LONDON.- Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale took place this evening (24 June 2008) and realised £144,440,500 / $283,970,023 / €182,428,352 - the highest ever total for an art auction held in Europe. The top lot of the auction was Le bassin aux nymphéas, a masterpiece painting by Claude Monet which realised £40,921,250 / $80,451,178 / €51,683,539, a world record price for the artist at auction.

“Let Your Motto Be Resistance? at California African American Museum

Los Angeles, CA - The title of this inaugural exhibition for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture is drawn from a statement by abolitionist Henry Highland Garnet, who said in 1843, “Let your motto be resistance! Resistance! RESISTANCE! No opposed people have ever secured Liberty without resistance.” The exhibition will be on view at the California African American Museum (CAAM) from June 26 through September 14, 2008.

The Vancouver Art Gallery hosts ~ Zhang Huan: 'Altered States'

Vancouver, Canada - Zhang Huan: Altered States is the first museum survey of Zhang Huan, encompassing major works produced over the past 15 years in Beijing, New York and Shanghai. Zhang Huan is best known for his early body-based performances, both controversial and poetic, most of which involve physical endurance. He moved to New York IN 1998 and established himself as one of the most important and widely recognized expatriate Chinese artists. More recently, Zhang returned to China and founded a studio in Shanghai, where he has expanded his medium. Exhibition on view through 5 October, 2008 at The Vancouver Art Gallery.

Grecian Taste & Roman Spirit: The Society of Dilettanti coming to The Getty Villa

LOS ANGELES, CA - In 1734, a group of young British gentlemen, all alumni of the Grand Tour in Italy, formed a dining club in London. Calling themselves the Society of Dilettanti (from the Italian dilettare, to take delight), this close-knit association transformed classical antiquity from a private pleasure to a public benefit by sponsoring archaeological expeditions, forming collections, and publishing influential books on ancient architecture and sculpture. The Society’s first century is explored in Grecian Taste and Roman Spirit: The Society of Dilettanti, on view from August 7–October 27, 2008, at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa.

SITE Santa Fe Presents Its Seventh International Biennial

SANTA FE, NM - Process, experimentation, and collaboration are the hallmarks of Lucky Number Seven, SITE Santa Fe’s Seventh International Biennial, which opened on Sunday, June 22, 2008. Curator Lance M. Martin Puryear's Career Showcased at National Gallery of Art Retrospective

WASHINGTON, DC.- Forty-six powerful works by internationally acclaimed sculptor Martin Puryear (b. 1941) is on view at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in the artist's first retrospective in the United States in more than a decade. Martin Puryear includes sculptures dating from 1976 to the present, including one monumental work created especially for the exhibition tour. On view June 22 through September 28, 2008, the exhibition is the first in the Gallery's history to be installed in both the West and East Buildings.

Richard Diebenkorn in New Mexico at The Phillips Collection

WASHINGTON, DC - While Richard Diebenkorn has long been celebrated as one of the 20th century’s most important artists, the pivotal 30-month period he spent in Albuquerque, New Mexico between 1950 and 1952 has been largely overlooked. The Phillips Collection presents Diebenkorn in New Mexico, the first in-depth examination of this key time in the abstract expressionist artist’s creative development. Featuring 46 works, including paintings, works on paper, the exhibition marks the first time these pieces, now in public and private collections across the country, have been exhibited together since they were created more than 50 years ago. The Phillips Collection is the final venue for the exhibition, which opens on June 21 and remains on view through Sept. 7, 2008.
