SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Diego Museum of Art presents Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota, on view November 1, 2008–January 4, 2009. In conjunction with the Timken Museum of Art, SDMA is presenting a major exhibition featuring the work of internationally recognized Japanese textile artist and kimono designer, Itchiku Kubota (1917–2003). Kubota used a variety of traditional techniques and unique personal innovations to create shimmering, abstract landscapes through a complex layering of dyes and inks on monumentally-scaled kimono.

WAUSAU, WISCONSIN.- The Woodson Art Museum’s 33rd annual Birds in Art exhibition, opening Saturday, September 6, offers a creative and surefire remedy to cure avian envy. With the exhibition closing on November 9th, visitors have nine weeks to take the cure. Birds in Art comprises 126 original contemporary works by 113 painters and sculptors hailing from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and the United States.

HangART-7 in Salzburg hosts " LA Potential "

Salzburg, Austria - With the LA Potential exhibition this autumn the HangART-7 art programme is presenting contemporary art from Los Angeles. From 20 September to 9 November 2008 more than 60 works by nine young male and female artists will be on show in Hangar-7. Programme director Lioba Reddeker worked on the selection together with the Los-Angeles-based artists Hubert Schmalix and Roger Herman.

New York City - Monya Rowe Gallery announces a solo exhibition by Larissa Bates featuring painting, installation and video. Taking the title, Just Hustle and Muscle, from a wrestling t-shirt bearing the slogan "No Fat on the Mat, Just Hustle and Muscle, Wrestle”, Bates continues her investigation with gender identity and social politics by using the iconic image of a young wrestler to represent both the masculine and feminine characteristics of a male. Mao Tongqiang ~ Tools ~ 30,000 Axes, Hammers & Sickles

SINGAPORE - Mao Tongqiang’s Tools, which comprises of some 30,000 used sickles and hammers, were gathered by Mao and his associates over the course of three years from 2006 to 2008 from various parts of China. The choice of sickle and hammer was a deliberate one. For a Chinese audience, these are, first and foremost, common tools. Yet, they are amongst the most potent symbols in China for they form the emblem of the Chinese Communist Party. First used in the early 20th century and later incorporated into the flag of the Soviet Union, the hammer was regarded as the symbol of the industrial proletariat whilst the sickle represented the agricultural peasantry.

Venice Cancels Inauguration of Grand Canal Bridge Made by Santiago Calatrava

VENICE - Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava defended his bridge today from the critics. The bridge in Venice is a work that breaks with the architecture of the city being the first bridge constructed in 125 years. The bridge has been baptized as the Constitution Bridge. This is the fourth bridge that goes over the Grand Canal and while some approve of it others criticize it for its high cost. Those critics, headed by small political parties have made the local government make the decision not to officially inaugurate it on September 18.

Pavel Schmidt Exhibition at Jean Tinguely Museum in Switzerland

Basel, Switzerland - At once painter, draughtsman and an installation artist, Pavel Schmidt documents in this exhibition his interest in the manner in which our society appropriates for itself masterpieces of western art in order to transform them into misleading copies and objects of consumption. The exhibition presents the artist’s sculptures, paintings, drawings and installation. Some of his monumental works refer directly to the architecture of and to the art within the Museum Tinguely – Niki de Saint Phalle in- as well as outdoors. On view through 14 September, 2008.
