Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) Acquires 300 Photographs by Japanese Photographer Ishimoto Yasuhiro

HOUSTON, TX.- Ishimoto Yasuhiro (b. 1921), trained by Harry Callahan at the Institute of Design (or "New Bauhaus") in Chicago and widely acknowledged as one of the most influential Japanese photographers of his generation in the development of postwar Japanese photography, has donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 289 photographs dating from 1949 to 2005. The MFAH has purchased an additional 11 works. With this acquisition, the MFAH owns nearly 400 photographs by the artist.

LONDON.- David Hockney is once again exploiting the possibilities of new technology in art and this exhibition at Annely Juda Fine Art will show the striking results of his latest exploration. This show – on two floors of the gallery - includes 10 landscapes from Hockney’s Yorkshire homeland and 18 portraits in editions between 7 and 25. The sitters include David Hockney’s brother, sister, friends and colleagues. On exhibition 1 May through 11 July, 2009.

BRIGHTON, UK.- Brighton Museum & Art Gallery presents today The American Scene: Prints from Hopper to Pollock - A British Museum Tour, on view through August 31, 2009. The American Scene features around 80 outstanding prints by 56 leading modern American artists, including George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Louise Bourgeois and Jackson Pollock. China: Journey to the East - A British Museum Exhibition - Opens at The Herbert

COVENTRY, UK.- 250 years ago, the British Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. From the very beginning the Museum has always sought to make its collection as accessible as possible to a world public. Continuing this tradition, China: Journey to the East, supported by BP a China now legacy project, is a unique touring exhibition of over 100 objects from the British Museum’s collection, which offers visitors the chance to experience one of the world's most important and influential civilisations. The exhibition will tour to six venues across the country and is the largest UK loan of Chinese material the British Museum has yet undertaken.

Wilmington, DE - The Delaware Art Museum presents Ancestry & Innovation: African American Folk Art from the American Folk Art Museum, featuring a dazzling array of quilts, paintings, and sculptures, on view May 9, 2009 – July 12, 2009. This wide-ranging exhibition explores the artistic expressions of self-taught African American artists from the rural South and the urban North. Ancestry and Innovation: African American Art from the American Folk Art Museum was organized by the American Folk Art Museum, New York, and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibition was made possible by MetLife Foundation.

Hallie Ford Museum of Art to feature Mixed Media by Heidi Schwegler

SALEM , Ore. - A new installation by Portland mixed media artist Heidi Schwegler will be on display May 23rd through July 19th in the Study Gallery at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University. The installation will include a range of sculptural objects, prints and film that focus on “a moment of anguish.”

The High Museum of Art to Premiere "The Allure of the Automobile"

ATLANTA, GA - “The Allure of the Automobile,” the first exhibition to consider the stylistic development of automobiles in the context of prominent design movements such as Art Moderne and Postwar Modernity, will premiere at the High Museum of Art. The exhibition will present 18 of the world’s rarest and most brilliantly conceived cars ranging from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, including masterpieces by Bugatti, Duesenberg, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Ferrari. These cars combine state-of-the-art engineering, meticulous craftsmanship and groundbreaking design to create works of “rolling sculpture.” The exhibition, made possible by lead sponsor Porsche Cars North America, Inc. will be on view from March 20 through June 20, 2010.

Centre de la Photographie presents Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige ~ Wonder Beirut

Geneva, Switzerland - After their two collaborations with the International Festival of Cinema VISIONS DU RÉEL, the Centre de la photographie Geneve (CPG) took the initiative to organize a presentation of Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige works at CPG, as their works have video-cinematographic qualities as rich as they excel in the photographic realm. The CPG will not only show photographs by these two artists, born in Beirut in 1969, but also show two videos that cannot be shown other than as an installation.

Chicago Cultural Center displays The Cartoons of John T. McCutcheon ~ Chronicles of a Changing World

CHICAGO., IL - Cartoonist John T. McCutcheon was such a sharp observer of basic human nature that people still find aspects of themselves in his work, some of which was created over one hundred years ago. As an editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Record and Chicago Tribune newspapers between 1889 and 1946, his drawings chronicled a rapidly changing world. Some of the cartoons in this exhibition show a slice of Chicago life that is no more, while others have a strikingly current relevance, covering topics such as bank failures, anti-war sentiment, and even crooked governors.
