Erik Benson creates paintings which are informed by fragments of urban landscapes combined with elements of everyday culture. What remains absent from these works are any sign of living human life. It is Benson’s intention that these elements incorporate a resonance of the psycho-geography of placelessness that conveys the infrastructure of an urban landscape. The artist’s interest in space is echoed in his technique: acrylic paint is poured onto glass and, once this has solidified, it is then peeled off and applied to the canvas. Thus the landscape is in this way built up gradually as it is in reality.
Adela Leibowitz’s narratives take the viewer on a voyeuristic journey somewhere between the The Shining and Alice in Wonderland - the innocent meets the diabolical in one cohesive environment. With her influences ranging from Jung and Freud to romantic 19th century literature and vintage horror movies, her eerily still paintings are charged with a psychological energy that highlights various paradoxical elements: repulsion and beauty, fear and comfort, children and violence, and the domestic and the demonic.
Max Lowry portrays the intense relationship between lovers and the psyche of intimacy. In his works’ abstracted forms, the viewer gains a sense an intense range of emotions: from the excitement and frisson of first meeting to the passionate embrace or the calmness and the absolute feeling of closeness between two lovers. The works are made up of layers: a combination of oil painting, collage, and photography which is then printed and seductively pulls the viewer in, revealing something new at every glance.
Loredana Sperini refuses to be trapped by traditional media, exhibiting several works made with wax, embroidery, and even a piece which uses butterflies. Her works have layers of influence, including theology, folklore, literature, film, and musical references that altogether trigger memories and recollection in our subconscious and take us into a darker world. The powerful energy of the images in Sperini’s work contrasts with the slow and disciplined craft of her technique, creating a tense balance. This event is by invitation only.
