HangART-7 in Salzburg hosts " LA Potential "

Salzburg, Austria - With the LA Potential exhibition this autumn the HangART-7 art programme is presenting contemporary art from Los Angeles. From 20 September to 9 November 2008 more than 60 works by nine young male and female artists will be on show in Hangar-7. Programme director Lioba Reddeker worked on the selection together with the Los-Angeles-based artists Hubert Schmalix and Roger Herman.
The centre of the American film industry serves an ideal platform for creators of art to explore the relationship between reality and fiction. “Its lack of history means the city has the advantage of being free of tradition,” say Schmalix and Herman. In contrast to the New York art metropolis, artists in LA owe hardly anything to convention. They work on the West Coast lifestyle, on glamour and on consumer culture, but also on the underside of these worlds. The image worlds just as much revolve around everyday scenes such as the varied landscapes from the Pacific to the desert.
“The painting scene in Los Angeles is as diverse as the landscape itself. There is no specific style, no definable schools,” writes the Californian art critic Andrew Berardini in the catalogue for the exhibition. Painting is a stepchild in a Los Angeles dominated by performance and conceptual art. But this did not hold Schmalix and Herman back from creating an artist-run space for young painting in the early 1990s. The profile of young painting was to be raised. The Black Dragon Society quickly became a hotspot in the international art scene. “Like everything in the art world, the artistic success of this city is based on momentum and myth. But LA is a big small town and not an exception in the world,” according to the two artists.LA Potential shows works by the artists Allison Schulnik, Bart Exposito, Elisa Johns, Jacob Tillman, Raffi Kalenderian, Allison Cortson, David Deany, Eric Yahnker and Jasmine Little.
