Hammer Galleries present Joseph McGurl ~ 'Changing Light'
Thursday, 02 October 2008 22:48
New York City - Joseph McGurl shines as a master of the journey. As he says, "The process of discovery is just as important to me as the final painting. The real joy comes from trying things, learning...making discoveries." To create his luminous, harmonious landscapes and seascapes, which have been compared to the work of nineteenth century greats like Kensett and Bierstadt, McGurl has a demanding yet rewarding approach, spending countless hours in the field observing and painting. On exhibition October 2 through October 25, 2008 at Hammer Galleries.
The essence of McGurl's method lies in this working process, which begins with the plein air paintings he calls field studies, but which are often fully worked small oil paintings. They are the only information he brings back with him to the studio, where he selectively transforms some of these works to a larger scale.
Joseph McGurl's paintings have been included in numerous museum exhibitions, including a retrospective solo show at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, The Cahoon Museum of American Art, and the Saint Botolph Club of Boston. He participated in the recently completed From Sea to Shining Sea exhibition that traveled to twelve museums starting in 2004. His paintings were also featured in the 2001 Representing Representation V exhibition at the Arnot Art Museum, surveying the most significant current Realist painting of the day, and at the concurrent Representing Representation West at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art in Corning, New York. McGurl has been elected to the Guild of Boston Artists and is a Copley Master with the Copley Society of Boston where he teaches an annual workshop. He has won top awards from both organizations including the John Singleton Copley Award for Artistic Achievement. He has also been the subject of numerous magazine articles and his work has appeared in many books.
