Boca Raton, FL - Since moving to New York in 1979, British-born artist Graham Nickson (b, 1946) has influenced American figurative painting through his boldly delineated landscapes – all water, sky and bathing figures – in luminous mixtures of pure color. As the Dean of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, Nickson has been an important influence in American figurative art, as both an outstanding teacher and as a practicing artist. All his work is based on the practice of drawing, and through the act of observational drawing, Nickson’s unforgettable paintings are evocative symphonies of color and shape. This exhibition organized by the Boca Raton Museum, presents more than three decades of Nickson’s paintings and large charcoal drawings. With weight and importance equal to his paintings, Nickson’s drawings assert themselves as strong, contemporary interpretations of the traditional theme of bathers. With clarity and economy, Nickson’s drawings are as rich as his radiant paintings. In both, the artist always finds a perfect balance in compositions built like abstract structures of line, shape, geometry, saturated color and enigmatic human figures. A catalogue accompanies this exhibition.
