Geometric Landscapes Exhibition at Kamloops Art Gallery
Monday, 12 June 2006 13:07
Kamloops, BC - The Kamloops Art Gallery is proud to present a small exhibition of abstracted landscape paintings from its permanent collection. Geometric Landscapes from the Permanent Collection will be exhibited alongside Tradition and Innovation in 20th Century Chinese Paintings to September 3, 2006. Turn-of-the-century French painter Paul Cezanne is known as the first artist in the Western tradition to abstract the forms of still-lifes and landscapes into simpler geometric forms in order to better represent the “essence” of an image. Since then, artists throughout the Western world have used this approach to produce pictures of extraordinary simplicity, elegance, and charm. Geometric Landscapes from the Permanent Collection demonstrates many ways that artists have employed geometrical abstraction to create images of the landscape around Interior British Columbia and the rest of Canada.
Included are works spanning a thirty-year period by artists from the Kamloops region and other areas of B.C.: Gerry Johnson, Toni Onley, Jerry Pethick, Ted Smith, Anne Vaasjo, and Alan Wood.
