New York, NY - Forum Gallery presents a group exhibition featuring 22 works by contemporary women artists. In conjunction with The Feminist Art Project, a nationwide initiative celebrating the aesthetic, intellectual, and political impact of women on the visual arts, the artists in The Feminist Figure use the vocabulary of figuration to explore contemporary concerns. On exhibition until 5 May, 2007. Curator Marcia G. Yerman has included artists with a conscious focus on feminist intent and content. The exhibiting artists present works dealing with aspects of self-portraiture, identity, aging, and the preservation of the environment.
Employing a variety of media including pastel, ceramic, fabric, painting, sculpture, and new media, the artists present points of view that simultaneously echo each other’s concerns, and embody a distinctive and individual approach.
In her catalogue essay, Yerman states: “Collectively, the artists in The Feminist Figure engage others in the possibility of understanding the female experience in new and challenging ways. Through their unique perspectives, a fuller awareness of humanity is shared.”Artists featured in the exhibition include: Micaela Amato, Lena Cronqvist, Lesley Dill, Kim Dingle, Diane Edison, Martha Mayer Erlebacher, Kathleen Gilje, Susan Hauptman, Julie Heffernan, Rebecca Horn, Deb King, Holly Lane, Jane Lund, Diana Moore, Irene Hardwicke Olivieri, Verónica Riedel, Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Lezley Saar, Esther Shimazu, Kiki Smith, Maria Tomasula, and Cybèle Young.
