Cooperstown, N.Y. - The Fenimore Art Museum is pleased to announce the opening of At Home and on the Road, a retrospective exhibition on the work of Milo Stewart, Sr., Cooperstown resident and photographer, on Saturday, September 16. This exhibition provides a wonderful overview of Stewart’s work over the course of 40 years, including photography of Cooperstown, historical landmarks and main streets throughout New York State, octagon and Greek Revival buildings, and rural cemeteries, among other subjects. The exhibit also incorporates photographs from Stewart’s travels abroad. The exhibition will be on view through December 31, 2006.
Of local interest, the exhibition offers an intimate portrait of the village of Cooperstown and its residents. “It didn’t take long for me to figure out that the village of Cooperstown and the surrounding countryside offered rich photographic opportunities. Otsego Lake and the hilled vistas that frame it and the wide range of activities that take place upon it, from ice fishing to Flying Scots, were exciting. The splendid array of homes and businesses representing a variety of architectural styles were beautiful. And a host of seemingly unending creative community activities flourished, propelled by energetic, smart, and friendly people,” said Stewart.
Stewart’s interest in photography began while in high school in Buffalo, New York. “The process was a joy: framing the picture, pushing the button, and discovering the darkroom magic that made visible that which I had only imagined,” said Stewart of his early fascination with photography. Throughout high school and college, Milo fostered his love for photography by working in the camera department at JN’s, on Buffalo’s then-bustling, postwar Main Street and becoming an active member of Buffalo’s Museum of Science Camera Club.
