Rockland, ME - The Farnsworth Art Museum’s Julia’s Gallery for Young Artists and the Island Institute, both in downtown Rockland, Maine, are pleased to announce the opening exhibition of the Building Bridges project on December 15, 2007. The Building Bridges project, sponsored in part from a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, connects island youth to the mainland through art. Participating islands, North Haven, Vinalhaven, Matinicus, Islesboro, and Isle au Haut selected students to spend the summer of 2007 working with mentoring island artists from their community. The result is a mixed media exhibition of their summer work together, curated by the high school student volunteers of Julia’s Gallery.

Julia’s Gallery, an award winning youth art program and gallery, provides local students with an experiential learning opportunity that uses the resources of the Farnsworth Art Museum to explore the elements of art through the curatorial process. The Building Bridges project seeks to highlight the unique understanding and opportunity island youth experience, and challenge the students of Julia’s Gallery to showcase this exhibition, not only on the mainland, but also as it travels to each participating island during the summer of 2008.
