The 16th Everson Biennial features 81 works of art selected out of more than 800 submissions by juror Claire Schneider, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.  Created by 77 emerging and established artists living within 100 miles of Syracuse, the works reflect different interpretation of beauty.  From "Reclining Nude," an oil painting of a pear by Teresa Ross, to "NONA," a digital print of an older woman by Geraldine Liquidano, to London Ladd's "The Long Night," featuring a young boy, the works are extremely diverse.

"The Biennial always garners a great reaction from the local community, both in terms of entries and audience response," says Everson Director Sandra Trop.  "It is always interesting to see what our regional artists are creating.  We hope Central New York will enjoy the selection and appreciate the compelling theme of beauty."

For added excitement, those artists not selected for the 2006 Everson Biennial have been invited to share their work at the Salon des Refuses, organized by the Cultural Resources Council's Visual Arts Committee and held at the Syracuse Technology Garden. That exhibition runs June 8 to Aug. 18.  Holding a salon de refuses is a long-time tradition that started in Paris in 1863, when artists such as Monet, Picasso and Cezanne were rejected from the annual Salon.  In response, Napoleon III established the first Salon de Refuses to show their work.

The Everson Museum of Art, established in 1897 as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts, is internationally recognized for its extensive and significant collection of American ceramics and American art videos and for its distinctive structural design by the noted architect I.M. Pei.
