Beaumont, TX - Drawing is an intimate affair. Drawing is the artist's journal, his way of sorting through and interpreting the world around him. In countless studios, schools, parks and coffee shops, noted artists have drawn and sketched the world around them for centuries. In the exhibition An Intimate Affair: Drawings from the AMSET Permanent Collection, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas features 11 small drawings by 10 master artists, all displayed with a sense of this intimacy: each piece is isolated by large amounts of space and narrow lighting. On exhibit July 29–September 24, 2006. “This exhibition layout forces the viewer to approach the work and experience on much the same level that the artist would have in the process of creating it,” said Ray Daniel, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections. “My hope is that the viewers are drawn into the work by the layout of the galleries and hopefully gain a glimpse into the mind and soul of the artists who created them.” Represented in the exhibition are noted artists such as Robert Henri (1865-1929), who was an American painter best known for his leadership role in the Ashcan School art movement. Artists in the Ashcan movement in the early 20th century were known for works depicting scenes of everyday life among America’s urban poor.
Also featured in Intimate Affair is a crayon study from the 1951 film “Alice in Wonderland” by animator and entrepreneur Walt Disney (1901-1966). Through unique collections, exhibitions, public programs and outreach in the visual arts, our mission is to provide education, inspiration and creative vision throughout Southeast Texas.
