London - David Austen presents his first and much-anticipated film, Smoking Moon, in the Reading Room at Camden Arts Centre, coinciding with the exhibition of works by Victor Grippo in the galleries. Smoking Moon, a thirteen minute black and white film, is an illusion and a self portrait as well as a recording of a performance. On exhibition until 04 February 2007.Like a creature from the ocean depths, an ancient crescent moon hangs in a black void smoking a cigarette. This charming and witty film is also desperately sad and affecting.
David Austen’s work moves between abstraction and figuration. He makes watercolors of tiny figures; careful paintings of trees, texts and stars, and more recently constructions of wire, card and plaster. Often unashamedly nostalgic, his work speaks of fragility and longing.
Smoking Moon is the first in a series of films Austen plans to make. He has created a limited edition print especially for Camden Arts Centre which will be available in the Bookshop along with his book, Green Electric Morning.
