Los Angeles, CA - The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) presents COSIMA VON BONIN: ROGER AND OUT, the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of the work of German artist Cosima von Bonin. Organized by MOCA Senior Curator Ann Goldstein, the exhibition will be on view at MOCA Grand Avenue September 16, 2007 through January 7, 2008 and includes approximately 50 works from 1990 to present and several new sculptures created on the occasion of the exhibition.

“MOCA’s continuing role as a showcase of international, contemporary art is reinforced by this remarkable and surprising exhibition, COSIMA VON BONIN: ROGER AND OUT. Cosima’s explorations of cultural myth and expectation provide for especially challenging and often humorous, multidimensional encounters. It is MOCA’s mission to foster a dynamic platform for today’s most significant contemporary artists, and the opportunity to present von Bonin’s work for the first time in this country is particularly auspicious,” comments MOCA Director Jeremy Strick.

One of the most influential artists of her generation in Germany, von Bonin has been working for over 15 years in a wide-ranging and diverse practice that includes sculpture, photography, textile “paintings,” installation, performance, film, video, and music—often combined together in large-scale installations. Blending together references from a broad range of sources including the work of other artists, popular and vernacular culture, television, fashion, and electronic music, her work utilizes these different cultural phenomena in an open, fluid approach that embraces their contradictions and relationships to each other. Von Bonin’s work constructs a community of social relations using role-playing, collaboration, appropriation, and the transformation of the commonplace. Her works touch upon ideas of play and indoctrination, structure and improvisation, cultural and gender representations, and identity and self-reflection—with both absurdity and humor.

Her large-scale multi-media installation, KAPITULATION/CAPITULATION (2004) is also included. The work is a constellation of connected rooms that had previously been sets used for the production of a performance video and was produced for her acclaimed 2004 exhibition, 2 POSITIONS AT ONCE, at the Kölnischer Kunstverein in Germany. In addition, von Bonin will produce several new sculptures on the occasion of the exhibition.

COSIMA VON BONIN: ROGER AND OUT is accompanied by a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue co-published by MOCA and Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König in Cologne. Designed by Yvonne Quirmbach in association with the artist, it includes newly commissioned texts by the exhibition curator and others, including Isabelle Graw, Manfred Hermes, and Bennett Simpson, as well as an exhibition history, chronology, and bibliography of the artist.
