artwork: Charles Henry Miller Last Tollgate to Jericho RoadStony Brook, NY - Concern over Long Island’s disappearing landscape is not a new concept, as seen in an exhibition at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook.  One of the greatest champions of art and artists on Long Island, Charles Henry Miller (1842-1922) was committed to preserving its natural beauty.  On September 16, The Long Island Museum will unveil that beauty with the opening of the Charles Henry Miller exhibition.

The majority of Miller’s work was done in Queens, but he frequently traveled as far as East Hampton to work.  Some of his paintings suggest the vanishing countryside with names like “Last Tollgate on Jericho Road” and “Last Farm in Queens.”

Charles Henry Miller will feature more than a dozen paintings and several prints and original copper etching plates created during his long career.  He was particularly interested in creating an artistic record of the Long Island landscape, which rapidly changed with the advent of the railroad, and eventually automobiles during his lifetime.  Charles Henry Miller will run through February 18, 2007.
