Monday, 03 December 2007 21:08
Stanford, CA - This exhibition explores the work of three influential artists in the context of the new and growing tourism industry in the United States during the 19th century. Church, Homer, and Moran traveled extensively in the U.S. in search of picturesque and sublime landscapes to paint. On exhibition January 30 – May 4, 2008.
Their works, along with guidebooks and travel-related photographs and novels, helped to familiarize American audiences with the nation's scenic wonders. The exhibition includes nearly 70 painted sketches plus studio paintings, drawings, books, and stereographs. Organized by the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. Catalogue available.
The Cantor Arts Center boasts a proud and venerable history, as it was conceived of in tandem with the founding of Stanford University itself. The Stanford family, including Leland Jr., traveled the world collecting objects of art and cultural interest. The museum was originally created to make this collection available to students and the public. It has withstood natural disasters and periodic neglect, only to be resurrected, renewed, and expanded, with its collections stronger than ever, thanks to the passionate dedication of Stanford faculty and staff, and art lovers in the surrounding community.
