Denver, CO - Winner of the prestigious New Forms Initiative Grant awarded by the National Endowment to the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation, Byron Shen examines the eternal emotional landscape in his work. Based on the abstract, a sense of horizon pervades the spiritual quality of what the paint conveys.  They are places that he has traveled internally.  His work hints at what might be.  Shen attempts to formulate a style that translates these passages so that the viewer might recall his own journey, thus establishing a way to enter into a dialogue with the work before him.

artwork: A Distant TruthJames B. Watts of the Tulsa World describes Shen’s figurative paintings as “a step into Joe Andoe territory, [yet] distinctly Shen’s work, almost vibrating with barely contained energy.”   In Dawn, Shen merges the sunrise of a spiritual landscape with the scarred back of a mournful figure.  He peels away the woman’s layers, her past opening up to the world.  Painted onto a large canvas, the viewer feels she can step into the circumstance of the image.

Along a more abstract vein, A Distant Truth exposes, through texture and an almost incandescent glow, a secret reality emerging from the darkness.  A horse-like phantom raises its head into the blue.  In both his abstract and figurative work, Shen reaches into the depths of his audience, moving us in ways we cannot understand.

Byron Shen was born in Hong Kong in 1963, and came to the United States at the age of four. He earned his MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It was there that Shen developed his style of painting and installation work. He resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he is Head of the Visual Arts Department and Holliman Gallery Coordinator for Holland Hall School.  This is Byron Shen’s second exhibition at Wilson Adams Gallery.  We are proud to welcome him back.
