Santa Monica, CA - Hunsaker/Schlesinger Fine Art is pleased to present Purification and Renewal, new paintings and drawings by Brian Mains. Created over a period of seven years, Purification and Renewal is a continuation of the artist's extensive exploration into the human condition and desire for transcendence. On exhibition Sept 8 - Oct 27, 2007.
Faces of the figures are obscured, allowing them to become universal human forms. The light source is a spiritual dimension, at times a divine glow and others a burning, consuming inferno. Compositionally, the work is often symmetrical, containing circular geometric elements. These circular aspects suggest everything from mysterious portals, to the Buddhist wheel of life, to the bondage of this mortal coil and pull the viewer in with an almost dreamlike sensation of vertigo.
Born in Binghamton, NY, Brian Mains currently lives and works in Monrovia, CA. He graduated in 1973 with a BFA from the University of Houston. His work has been shown in The San Jose Museum of Art and in galleries and museums in Burbank, Houston, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Los Angeles, and Raleigh. Personal experiences as well as literature, philosophy, music, and psychology provide raw material for the artist.
The exhibition opens with an artist's reception on September 14th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The gallery is located in the Bergamot Station Arts Center, 2525 Michigan Ave., T3, Santa Monica.
