Tucson, AZ - The Brooklyn Museum of American Art has acquired the watercolor, 01 WN/13 (2001, watercolor on paper, 45 x 44 inches) by the artist Bohdan Osyczka. Born in 1921, Osyczka is known for his monumental-sized, boldly colored abstract watercolors. A well-known illustrator for such publications as Time magazine and The New York Times, as well as an instructor at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, Osyczka privately worked on developing his watercolor technique for forty years. Until recently, his encyclopedic knowledge of the medium and mastery of technique was known to only a few.
The Brooklyn Museum was introduced to the work after their recent survey exhibition of American watercolor up to 1952, Brushed with Light. A reviewer of that exhibition for The New York Times posed the question of what happened with watercolor in America after that date. The result was a flurry of mail directing the museum to watercolor artists working today. After consideration, the museum decided that Bohdan Osyczka’s work deserved a place in their institution.
The work selected, 01 WN/13, was chosen for its affinity to the museum’s Georgia O’Keefe watercolors. Eugenie Tsal, the John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum, calls it an “outstanding example of contemporary art.”
Bohdan Osyczka is represented by The Gallery at 6th & 6th in Tucson, AZ. Visit : www.sixthandsixth.com
