artwork: Cristian Silva Black Sun Green FlamingoAustin, TX - Cristián Silva was trained in the field of printmaking in the late 1980s and part of the first generation of artists from Chile's post-dictatorship era, Cristián Silva has become a renowned artist on the Latin American contemporary art scene.

For the Blanton Museum, Silva is creating Black Sun-Green Flamingo, a new and challenging large-scale pictorial piece, where the sentimental and the social are juxtaposed.  Deeply concerned by the dramatic dynamics of frontier politics along the Rio Grande area, Silva has reached out to a Texan local album cover of the early 1980s to comment on the dreams of the Promised Land held by people from both sides of the border.  Based on this slightly kitschy and surreal image source, Silva elaborates on the poetics of migration.

Curated by Cecilia Brunson, director of Incubo/Santiago del Chile, and former assistant curator of Latin American art for the Blanton Museum of Art.  On exhibition until 31 December, 2006.

As the largest university art museum in the country, and the premiere visual arts institution for Austin, we are proud to serve as a cultural link for all those who share our love of art and ideas.  The Blanton provides a variety of offerings for its visitors; everything from inspiring artworks to talks with artists and curators and art parties on the first Friday of every month.  Find out more about experiencing the Blanton!  Visit : www.blantonmuseum.org/
