 WARSAW (AP).- A Polish court
convicted three men Thursday of the theft of the notorious "Arbeit Macht Frei"
(Work Sets You Free) sign from the Auschwitz memorial site in December. The men,
two of whom are brothers, were given prison sentences ranging from 18 months to
2½ years. In footage from the court, TVN24 showed the men, with their
faces blurred, showed each man in turn expressing regret and acknowledging that
stealing the sign was not a good idea. The theft occurred in the night
between Dec. 17 and Dec. 18, a brazen heist that shocked Holocaust survivors and
many others committed to preserving the Auschwitz-Birkenau site.

YORK, NY.- David Zwirner presents the first solo exhibition by
Marlene Dumas since the artist joined the gallery in 2008. Against the Wall
features all new works from 2009 and 2010. This marks the first time since 2001
that the artist has presented a new body of work in New York. Known for
her unique approach to canvas and her thought-provoking subject matter, Marlene
Dumas is widely considered one of today’s most important painters. Her
work is characterized by a sensual and gestural technique that is also swift,
dry, and minimal, as if under pressure to leave only what is necessary. On view

MADRID.- The Palacio de Cristal was inaugurated in
1887 with an exhibition of the flora of the Philippines, Spain’s pre-eminent
colony at that time. Palm trees and indigenous plants of many kinds were
installed in a ceremonial layout that centred on two chairs raised on a dais,
flanked by tapestries and accessed across a spread of oriental carpets.
Transforming the greenhouse into an exotic mise-en-scene, Pierre Huyghe's
installation formed part of a larger project devoted to the Philippines, its
natural resources and material culture. In its built form the Palacio
de Cristal belongs to the typology of the green house; in its role and
functions, however, it can be more closely aligned with Joseph Paxton’s Crystal
Palace built in 1852 for one of the first world’s fairs. The kinds of exhibits
presented in London at that epochal event – manufacturing and industrial goods,
art and artefacts – became the staple of the Universal Exhibitions that were to
prove such a popular feature of later 19th and early 20th century western
culture.
