St. Petersburg, Russia - The State Russian Museum opens the “Alexei Kondratyevich Savrasov (1830-97)” exhibition in the Benois Wing of the Mikhailovsky Palace.  The exhibition comprises more than 90 works of painterly and graphic art by this world-famous artist from the collections of the State Russian Museum & State Tretyakov Gallery.

Alexei Savrasov ranks among the most prominent Russian artists of the second half of the 19th century.  His art played a paramount part in the formation & flourishing of the new Russian realistic landscape painting.  His magic brush created astoundingly inspiring images in which clarity & sincerity coincided with high lyrical & romantic intensity.  The exhibition will be on display until December 4, 2006.

The State Russian Museum today is a unique depository of artistic treasures, a leading restoration center, an authoritative institute of academic research, a major educational center and the nucleus of a network of national museums of art.

The Russian Museum collection contains circa 400.000 exhibits.  The main complex of museum buildings - the Mikhailovsky Palace and Benois Wing - houses the permanent exhibition of the Russian Museum, tracing the entire history of Russian art from the tenth to the twentieth centuries.  The museum collection embraces all forms, genres, schools and movements of art.
