Aakriti Art Gallery hosts 'GEN NEXT II'

Kolkata, India - Aakriti Art Gallery is celebrating its second anniversary by with a comprehensive show of paintings and sculptures by forty Indian contemporary artists below forty years of age.‘ Gen Next II’— as the show is titled will be on until Oct 15^th, 2007. Why Gen Next II? It’s only once in a while that promising young talents from across the country can be brought together in such larger numbers. Secondly, the older generation offer a more familiar and settled stylistic idioms, while on the other hand, the new generation always have the propensity to strike out in completely new directions. They are at home with global technology and its impact on the social-cultural fabric of the society. Therefore, their visual language, approach to gender issues, their take on life, sexuality and future shows a leap from what we are used to seeing.

By observing their work one can see that these artists increasingly succeed in expanding and altering their chosen medium to evolve and convey their unique aesthetic language. They have no uncertainties about combining images and information from a broad range of sources and in placing them within new contexts. They effortlessly mix present-day elements with images from a history and classical art that have long buried in our collective memory. By doing this they are offering a critical reflection and an interrogation of relationship, space, time and role playing concerning one‘s one identity as an artist and existence. This expression is romantic, and always personal. Such qualitative artistic energy is bound to unleash a lively discourse on the art, and stands to become an essential component in the understanding of the contemporary Indian art scenario.
