MALAGA, SPAIN - František Kupka took painting to
its essential elements: the plane, line and dot. Over the course of his career
he developed a highly distinctive and unique style that still defies any attempt
to classify it due to its focus on science, philosophy and
mysticism. In addition, Kupka’s work suggests new approaches to interpreting the
birth and evolution of modern art. The exhibition held at the Museo
Picasso Málaga brings together around 90 works, including oil paintings,
drawings, gouaches and prints. They span the career of this unique artist, from
his earliest academic studies to his pioneering discoveries within the field of
abstract painting. On view though 25 April,
2010.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Two new exhibitions which opened at the Salvador Dalí Museum this fall highlight the diverse ways Western and non-Western mythology enlivened Surrealism. Wifredo Lam in North America is the first U.S. exhibit in over 30 years to feature works by Lam, the celebrated 20th century Cuban-born artist. This national traveling exhibition organized by the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University represents the major phases in Lam’s career, with examples spanning from 1927 through 1985. The exhibit focuses on Lam’s impact on the development of modern art in America, tracing the way in which he combined aspects of the European avant-garde with Afro-Cuban myths and art forms, leaving a legacy of intercultural dialogue that remains influential to this day.

LONDON.- Describing himself as 'the idol thief',
Subodh Gupta is one of the most exciting and audacious contemporary artists to
have emerged in recent years. The man dubbed by The Guardian as the
'subcontinental Marcel Duchamp' will exhibit simultaneously at Hauser &
Wirth’s Piccadilly and Old Bond Street galleries
throughout October. Among the works he’s making specifically for this, his first
major UK solo show, is a three-dimensional reworking in bronze of Duchamp’s
moustachioed Mona Lisa, L.H.O.O.Q, (1919). 'Art language is the same all over
the world', he claims, 'which allows me to be anywhere.' On view 1
October through 31 October, 2009.

New York City - Mireille Mosler, Ltd. announces a solo exhibition of Simon Linke’s Artforum advertisement paintings dating from 1988 to the present. The classic square Artforum ad (the grid-like design of which was conceived by Ed Ruscha,) serves as an indelible endorsement of the exhibition it announces. Although Artforum is respected for its serious editorial content, its advertisements have become an increasingly significant component of the magazine. Often seen before or in lieu of the actual exhibition, advertisements encourage pre-judgment based on commercial qualities such as graphic design, recognizable gallery logos, or the artist’s assumed prestige. With humor, critique, and technical precision, Linke reproduces these familiar images to displace the ego and reclaim art’s conceptual content. On view through 25 October, 2008.
