Kansas City, MO.- The Hilliard Gallery in Kansas City is pleased to present "Identity/Duplicity by Lacey Lewis". the exhibition opens on June 3rd and will remain on view through June 24th. In "Identity/Duplicity" Lewis explores the identity of people and the duplicity of it, through her paintings she examines how one presents themselves to others as compared to who they really are. Lacey Lewis paints images of the human form to create narratives that fuse contemporary and traditional ideas.
Focusing almost completely on women as her subject, she often incorporates historical or religious themes to evoke familiar sentiments and relate them to the modern world. Her nudes supersede the typical figure-as-still-life or landscape that dominates the genre, and instead emphasizes the individuality and psyche of the model through theatrical poses and dramatic lighting.
Working primarily in oil and graphite, Lewis employs traditional techniques and is committed to the revival of realist standards and archival methods. She often begins with a detailed drawing of the figure in graphite before sketching the composition onto a canvas or panel to be painted. Lewis employs various practices used by old and contemporary masters of painting depending on the desired result. While Lewis maintains a constant presence in the art world by participating in juried exhibitions across the country and presenting at least one solo-exhibition per year in the Midwest, she also commits a liberal amount of time to educating the public about the importance of art and art education through in-person and online presentations. She is passionate about handing-down expertise she has gained studying artists that came before her and teaches art privately and though classes and workshops.
The Hilliard Gallery is one of the oldest and largest fine art galleries in Kansas City. The Gallery was established in November of 1974, by previous owner Kent Hilliard. Located in the heart of the beautiful Country Club Plaza, the Hilliard Gallery began its eventful history. During the second year of operation they became the exclusive authorized dealer for artist, LeRoy Neiman, in the Kansas City area and remain so today. Due to the constant awareness of the ever-changing art market, the diversity and stability of the gallery has improved each year. In each of their locations on the Plaza the gallery has survived and continued to grow despite such disasters as the plaza flood of 1977 and the Hyatt hotel , in which their satellite gallery was completely destroyed along with the inventory inside. The Hilliard Gallery provides both investment quality art and a large designer selection. The gallery's custom framing operation is one of the best in quality with particular attention to detail in the workmanship and material specifications. In March 2006 the gallery moved to its current facility at 1820 McGee, Kansas City, Missouri in the crossroads art district. The Hilliard Gallery maintains a large inventory located on the premise as well as direct working relationships with over 200 artists and their publishers.
