Sedona, Arizona.- It has been a quarter century since Lanning Gallery opened its doors in the heart of Sedona’s Gallery District and the gallery is celebrating with a special exhibition. During that city’s “1st Friday Gallery Tour” December 2, 5-8 pm, the gallery welcomes master jeweler Michael Grant, who unveils his latest pieces of hand-cut stone bead jewelry; the gallery also unveils a rare collection of works on paper by artist Ted CoConis. The CoConis drawings presented in this exhibition include graphite, pastel, oil and ink and represent a range of sizes. Each piece is matted and framed. This is not only a rare collection but a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire works by this acclaimed artist at a more accessible price point. This special exhibition will remain on view throughout December.

Though it’s been close to four decades since CoConis turned exclusively to fine art, there had been stylistic touchstones to his fine art style already appearing in the many notable illustrations he is famed for, including film posters for “Man of La Mancha” and “Fiddler on the Roof” Collectors of his who have extensive libraries have found his artwork on notable book covers long held on their shelves; book covers such as “The Devil Tree” by Jerzy Kosinski show the same sheer layers over minute detail that CoConis has refined into intricate master works. Many of the pieces in this new collection are studies for what would become large-scale oil paintings, such as the detailed graphite drawing that preceded the 54” x 50” oil on linen painting “Splendeurs des Courtisanes,” which ultimately became a splendor of pale courtesan flesh against brilliant blood-red bed canopies, and, in graphite form is a study of detailed figures melting into sheer filmy fabric over the strong woods of near-gothic bed architecture. This drawing, like “Folie a Deux,” “Carousel,” and others, references the artist’s “Women of Paris” series; other of the works on paper follow the artist’s series of real, yet surreal, nudes of which his wife, and muse, is a model.
