Los Angeles, CA.- The 724,000 square feeet L. A. Mart® will be home to Art Platform - Los Angeles from October 1st through October 3rd. Open to the public will be several floors and thousands of square feet dedicated to the exhibition, exploration, and discovery of contemporary art from Southern California. The building is situated at the perimeter of Los Angeles’ downtown residential redevelopment, Staples Center, L.A. Live!, Los Angeles Convention Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, Music Center, as well as other numerous world-class civic and cultural institutions. The Art Platform - Los Angeles art fair will demonstrate the rich and diverse cultural landscape of Southern California and underscore Los Angeles’ influential position within the contemporary art world.

This exhibition will bring together the local and international artists, dealers, collectors, museums, and art enthusiasts that play important roles in the vibrant Southern California art community.  To emphasize the increased recognition of Los Angeles as an international art capital along with the anticipation of the shows and events taking place during the J. Paul Getty Museum’s Pacific Standard Time initiative, the directive of Art Platform - Los Angeles 2011 will be to contextualize works by the many critically acclaimed artists working in and from Los Angeles. To demonstrate Los Angeles' position in the contemporary art world, priority will be given to single artist presentations or to curated presentations of Los Angeles based artists, thus giving emphasis to artists individual practices both locally and globally. Art Platform - Los Angeles is launching the same weekend as Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945 - 1980,  an unprecedented collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. Initiated through grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time will take place for six months beginning October 2011. Pacific Standard Time encompasses developments from L.A. Pop to post-minimalism; from modernist architecture and design to multi-media installations; from the films of the African American L.A. Rebellion to the feminist activities of the Woman’s Building; from ceramics to Chicano performance art; and from Japanese American design to the pioneering work of artists’ collectives.

Amongst the special events forming part of Art Platform LA are 'Open Platform', a series of discussions on contemporary art in Los Angeles with some of today's top collectors, curators, museum directors, gallerists, scholars, and critics. We are also developing other events such as film screenings, live performances, and public art programs. Artillery: Killer Text on Art, will present the Artillery Magazine Video Lounge curated by Paul Young. Young Projects was founded on the idea of changing the ways in which people think of moving imagery—offering a challenge to the traditional model defined by movies and television, and to see it instead as a concrete art form, much like painting, fine art photography and sculpture. The Artillery Magazine Video Lounge will offer a flexible venue for experimental film artists and contemporary artists alike to explore the medium and push it into new territories. Under the title of 'Boom', a collection of more than 40 MFA students and recent graduates from art schools throughout Southern California presented an exhibition installed in a 7,000 square feet area within the L.A. Mart during July and August. This larger installation, which represents a range of mediums including video installations, sculpture, paintings, and interactive spaces, was curated down by Ali Subotnick, curator at the Hammer Museum, and the best pieces are included in Art Platform LA. Co/Lab, the new and unique event bringing together 19 non-profit art institutions, alternative spaces and independent art initiatives under one roof, is excited to announce its launch at Art Platform LA. At the Co/Lab installation, artists, gallerists, curators and collectors can survey the thriving art landscape of Los Angeles and allow art lovers to discover new talents from some of the most exciting new spaces showcasing emerging artists today.
