Berlin, Germany - The new Ida Illuster Gallery in Berlin will open on September 29th with a special exhibition of original drawings by Felix Mertikat. In its inaugural exhibition the gallery will host a selection of original drawings by Felix Mertikat from the book 'Jakob', under the title "Rabenkind: Drawings by Felix Mertikat" from September 30th until November 25th. The comic book 'Jakob' is about a boy whose mother 'goes away forever', who then starts looking for her. Felix Mertikat's drawings are a combination of pencil and watercolour that create very intense scenes through their colourful surrealism and stylistic diversity. 'Jakob' is a very personal book about the little child who remains in us when we become adults.
We all wish that the world would be as simple as it used to be when we were a little child. Complex, incomprehensible things like love and death we try to explain with the help of simplifying phrases, aphorisms and euphemisms. Felix Mertikat (born 1983 in Esslingen am Neckar) studied Animation at the Film Academy of Baden-Württemberg, where he specialized in storyboarding and character design/character development. Mertikat works as an illustrator for big publishing houses and advertising agencies and as a storyboarder, character and concept designer for movie production companies and others. In his diploma project 'Jakob' (2010) Felix Mertikat combined his love for figures with his aspiration to make the non-visible in his pictures come alive. Felix Mertikat and author Benjamin Schreuder were awarded the Sondermann-Preis “Best Newcomers 2010“ for their book 'Jakob' at the book fair in Frankfurt am Main. 'Jakob' was published in 2010 by the Cross Cult publishing company in Ludwigsburg. An artist talk with the artist and illustrator Felix Mertikat will take place at the gallery on Friday, November 4th.

The Ida Illuster Gallery is the first Berlin gallery to focus on original illustrations from picture books. With a selection of exceptional, outstanding artists and illustrators gallery owner Ursula Kleuters wants to encourage a dialogue on the development of our image culture. The gallery’s main focus is original works on paper which are based on a specific narrative format, as well as sequences of images that create a comic book. After many years as a photographer, picture editor and art consultant in Germany and abroad, Ursula Kleuters founded the Gallery Ida Illuster. Today she lives with her family in Berlin, after spending many years in Madrid. Ursula Kleuters explains the name of her gallery as follows: “Ida Illuster“ in free translation means “the outstanding creation“. “ida“ after id/idh in Old High German, the creation, the work, “illuster“ like brilliant, grand after lat. illustris/brilliant. This matches the well selected and vivid individual pieces of art that will be on show in my gallery. Visit the gallery's website at ... http://idailluster.net/
