Bangkok, Thailand .- Whitespace Gallery in Bangkok is pleased to present "Suwit Maprajuab: Survivors" from June 3rd through July 3rd, with an opening reception on June 2nd.For his first solo exhibition, Suwit Maprajuab (an artist born in Isan, far away from the sea) presents a collection of sculptures made from discarded oil tanks and depicting coastal marine life: crabs, prawns, shrimps, mussels, fish and their like.
Suwit is inspired (and worried) by the changes the mankind inflicts upon its environment, the issues of pollution, global warming and climate variance. He is trying to imagine how humble marine creatures can adapt to relentless challenges dictated by the unpredictable human inventiveness. Since the fish cannot speak for itself, it must wait for an artist to convey its message. Our gallery welcomes you to join in a contemplation of what the fish would have to say about the thoughtless men and women affecting the world, from a tiny coastal animal all the way up to an entire planet.
Whitespace gallery is an exhibition venue focusing on contemporary Thai and international arts and named after Whitespace design company whose patronage it has enjoyed since the beginning of its mission. A joint vision of Maitree Siriboon and David John Mayer, the gallery materialized in late 2006 when the first floor of the design company workspace was allocated for its needs. At that time, Maitree was a rising new name on the Bangkok art scene, about to attend The Independent Art Space Leadership Program in Paris. David, the owner of Whitespace company, is a well-known American architect who lives and works in Thailand.
The gallery is located in Siam Square, a fashionable shopping district at the heart of modern Bangkok, on the second floor of Lido cinema with 80 square meters of exhibition space. An eclectic influx of visitors (students, artists, tourists, as well as art lovers and dedicated collectors) has brought the gallery to prominence in the world of contemporary Thai arts, and we have received an excellent media coverage, both in Thailand and abroad. The gallery organizese 8-10 exhibitions annually, with contributions from a number of distinct media: painting, prints, photography, sculpture, video art, installation and concept art. Their mission is to provide a stimulating opportunity platform for the next generation of contemporary artists, and also to benefit from culture currents connecting Thailand to Europe, America and the rest of the world.
