San Francisco.- On Friday, June 10th, the John Pence Gallery is opening a show of recent paintings and drawing of Thomas Kegler. Thomas Kegler's solo exhibition will remain on view at the gallery through July 9th. There will be a reception for the artist and his family Friday 10th from six to eight P.M. This will mark a West Coast and national debut for the artist who was awarded a coveted Hudson River Fellowship last year.
His recent absorbtion into the academic tradition of landscape painting has been revelatory, and we are fortunate to be the first audience to be able to view his transformative development. The paintings are, indeed, uniquely his own. One gets a sense of nature in his work. The liveliness of the trees and grasses, the movement of cloud formations that embellish an already epic view, and the choice of the artistically famous Hudson River Valley as his primary focus. Since so many of our great past American Masters painted these same environs, comparisons can be drawn. Kegler stands out and holds his own against the stiffest "competition."
Thomas Kegler is an accomplished contemporary realist painter and art instructor from the Western New York area. His traditional oil paintings of landscapes, still life, and figures draw from the Masters' approach to the canvas. From the local familiar hills of Western New York and the Catskills to the majestic mountains of Alaska and Oregon, the act of painting is an opportunity to recall moving personal experiences. Revisiting the processes and techniques of the Old Masters in light of classical and contemporary subjects guides his expression of life's subtleties. Thomas is active teaching workshops, presenting to groups, critiquing and judging shows, and organizing various art related events in New York.

The John Pence Gallery, now in its 33rd year in downtown San Francisco, is one of the premier academic realist galleries in the U.S. Primarily known for its strong stable of living academic realists, the gallery also presents significant works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The gallery is San Francisco's largest, including more than 8,000 square feet of prime exhibition space. Visitors are welcomed, without pressure, and are encouraged to seek answers to questions about works on view, artists represented, and art in general. The staff is knowledgeable and collector-friendly.
