London.- A classic Morgan 4x4 sportscar, hand painted by the conceptual Danish artist Kristian von Hornsleth, will be auctioned by Bonhams as part of its sale of Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on 1 July 2011. Launched on the Lord Mayor’s Parade last year, it is the first in a series of only ten cars that the artist has painted. It has attracted a pre-sale estimate of £40,000 – 60,000.
Hornsleth rose to fame in 2006 following his Uganda Village Project, where he rebranded a poor village in Africa and persuaded villagers to change their names, legally, to Hornsleth. Talked about around the world, the project was Hornsleth’s response to the way we give aid to Third World countries: ‘We want to help you, but we want to own you.’ The Morgan Hornsleth project, on the other hand, is intended to challenge people’s opinions of the classic car. The artist, whose life has been turned into an award-winning stage play in Copenhagen, has said: “Why do cars have to be black in Kensington? They can be colourful in new ways to suit the new generation of drivers. In the Morgan/Hornsleth car you take off into the big noise of life and the beautiful chaos of opportunity.”
Other cars to be sold at the auction include a rare 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Cabriolet (Estimate: £500,000 - 700,000). One of two known to have been bodied in this style by the famous Italian carrozzeria Bertone and delivered new to San Francisco resident Mrs Edith Field. Mrs Field exhibited the DB2/4 at the 1955 Pebble Beach Concours d'elegance where it achieved 3rd place in the two-seater sports car category. The car later returned to the UK and was owned by legendary Grand Prix and sports-racing driver Innes Ireland. This exquisite cabriolet has just emerged from a concours condition restoration by noted marque specialists and will be one of the undoubted stars of this year's Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed sale. Also in the auction are a 1967 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2 (right-hand drive) previously owned by Sir Paul McCartney (Estimate: £100,000 - 120,000) and a 1925 Bugatti T35 (Estimate: £400,000 - 500,000) among more than 25 lots.
