Danziger Projects Opens "The Art Fair is Present"

NEW YORK, NY.- Starting off the summer program, Danziger Projects will present a group exhibition and installation titled "The Art Fair is Present". On one hand a playful reference to the just finished Marina Abramović retrospective at MoMA (titled "The Artist is Present") the exhibition is comprised of work exhibited by the gallery in recent art fairs mixed with new work by Jean-Philippe Delhomme commenting on the New York art world. On the other hand, the exhibition seriously calls into question the practice and convention of how art is viewed in galleries, how information is provided, how commerce is conducted, and what effect and to what extent communication (or the lack of) is a part of the process.

Installed in the manner of an art fair booth with a variety of works displayed and labeled on the wall, the installation will incorporate a table and chairs within the public gallery space at which the gallery director or a member of staff will be available at all times to talk to visitors about the work on view and the general concept of the show. On view 9 June through 9 July.

Contrary to the Chelsea convention where the visitor is often ignored, it will be our aim during the show to create a dialog. In this way, the exhibition addresses the differing experience of how art is viewed, and by extension how context and presentation affect perception and behavior.

Following on from the James Danziger Gallery (founded in 1989,) Danziger Projects opened in November 2004 in the heart of the Chelsea art district. Focusing primarily on artists working in photography, but also exhibiting video and painting, Danziger Projects combines the presentation of new work with the rediscovery and re-assessment of work by established voices.

As a project space, the gallery maintains a collaborative relationship with its own artists as well as with other galleries and artists. Outside collaborations include a publishing project and exhibition with Jack Pierson (in association with Cheim and Read) and the exhibition of Harry Callahan's "Women Lost in Thought" series (in association with Pace MacGill).
