Chicago, IL - The Thomas Masters Gallery, is pleased to announce the exhibition Adrian Leverkuhn “Palimpsest” running March 5 through April 4, 2010. A palimpsest is a manuscript page from a scroll or book that has been scraped off and used again. The title of this exhibition is a description of both the process of making the paintings and of the conceptual approach to Leverkuhnʼs work. Opening reception Friday , March 5, 2010 6-9 pm.
He address people on a personal level, one as much as possible devoid of cultural and literal bias, while being mindful of the history and tradition of human civilization and art. Though they are present throughout this body of work, the figures are not the main characters in a traditional sense. It is telling in that respect that the titles of the paintings are derived from the compositions, rather than the expressions of the figures. For example, the double helix shape in the overall composition of “Palimpsest 10 (1859 A.D.)” incorporates a figure as part of a strand of DNA, and references the year Charles Darwinʼs “The Origin of Species” was published.
The figure is not an allegory, but a point of focus where our eyes can enter and explore the physical space and surface of the canvas. On this level, the layering and intertwining of separate applications and subtractions of paint mirror psychology in the body and in the space around it, so that the same body becomes a symbol of our humanity, rather than the resemblance of a human.
