SEDALIA, MISSOURI—The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the campus of State Fair Community College will mount a mid-career retrospective for artist Marc Leuthold Feb. 6 through April 25, 2010.The artist will give a public lecture at 2 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Stauffacher Center for the Fine Arts on campus followed by an opening reception until 4 p.m. in the museum. The exhibition, Marc Leuthold, Sculpture, 1995-2010, surveys the artist’s signature ceramic sculpture produced during the past 15 years. Museum Director Thomas Piché, Jr., curated the exhibition, which is accompanied by an illustrated catalog.

For his exhibition at the Daum, Leuthold has created “Offering,” a multidimensional environment that will transform the museum’s largest gallery space into “a site of contemplation and wonder,” said Piché.

Leuthold, one of the leading ceramists of his generation, is celebrated for his intricately carved ceramic forms. His practice has evolved from the discreet display of finely sculpted ceramic discs, wheels and cones to large-scale installations of diverse objects and ideas. He is well regarded for the formal and procedural complexity of his work and often praised for his ability to evoke spiritual, metaphysical, or cosmic associations through sculptures and settings that are largely non-representational.

Leuthold has exhibited internationally, including sites in Taiwan, Korea, Latvia, Japan, Switzerland, and Turkey, as well as nationally at venues including PS 1 Contemporary Arts Center/Museum of Modern Art, Long Island City, N.Y.; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Mint Museum, Charlotte, N.C.; Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, N.Y.; the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; and the American Craft Museum, New York City.

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of William and Mary and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is an assistant professor of art at the State University of New York at Potsdam, and has held teaching positions at Princeton University and Parsons School of Design. He is one of 40 Americans to be elected a lifetime member of the International Academy of Ceramics, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The exhibition received funding from the Windgate Charitable Foundation. The Missouri Arts Council also provided financial assistance for the project. Ditzfeld Transfer, Inc., Sedalia, and Fondation Bruckner, Geneva, Switzerland, provided additional assistance. The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art Endowment, SFCC and the SFCC Foundation support all museum programs.

The museum collects, preserves, interprets, and exhibits modern and contemporary works of art. The museum offers a temporary-exhibition series that changes three times a year. It houses nine exhibition galleries on three levels with a combined area of 9,300 square feet. The Daum’s permanent collection of more than 800 artworks includes diverse paintings, drawings, prints, works in clay, and sculpture created since the mid-20^th century. It features works by Andy Warhol, Dale Chihuly, Helen Frankenthaler, Peter Voulkos, Louise Bourgeois, and Betty Woodman. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The museum is closed Mondays. Admission is free.
