The Vancouver Art Gallery to feature Michael Lin ~ A Modest Veil
Written by Sidney Waterford Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:29
Vancouver, BC - Michael Lin is highly regarded for his monumental painted installations that reconfigure and redesign public spaces. Using patterns based on traditional Taiwanese textiles, his work has been integrated into museum cafés, lobbies, galleries and façades in many countries, dynamically transforming their architecture and the way they are perceived by the public.
For his solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art
Gallery, Michael Lin has created an enormous hand-painted mural that will cover
the Gallery’s Georgia Street façade, bringing his artwork outside the
traditional confines of the Gallery space. Expanding on his interest in veiling
the institution, he has also conceived a book-wrapping project for the Gallery
Store, which will cover Gallery publications in a wrapping paper of his own
design.
Raised in Taiwan, Lin lives between Brussels, Shanghai and Taipei. His work reflects the influence of these diverse sites of cultural production and his movement between them.
Michael Lin: A Modest Veilis organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and presented with Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and the City of Vancouver's Public Art Program. The exhibition is sponsored by Omega and supported by the Council for Cultural Affairs (Chinese Taipei) in collaboration with the Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York. Curated by Bruce Grenville, senior curator, with Emmy Lee, assistant curator.
The Vancouver Art Gallery's collection of nearly 9,000 works of art represents the most comprehensive resource for visual culture in British Columbia. Established in 1931 with the founding of the Gallery, the collection grows by several hundred works every year. It is a principal repository of works produced in this region, as well as related works by other Canadian and international artists.
