San Francisco- CA - ArtZone 461 presents a solo exhibition featuring a survey of works, 1947 to the present, by historic Bay Area artist José Ramón Lerma. He is among the important artists whose careers are most associated with the San Francisco school of Abstract-Expressionism. Reception for the artist Saturday September 12, 5:00 – 8:00 pm. On exhibition September 12 through October 18, 2009 at ArtZone 461 Gallery.
José Ramón Lerma studied at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) from 1950 to 1958 where he graduated with his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. His education was interrupted from 1951 to 1953 as he served with the U.S. Army in Korea.
Early on he was influenced by the ‘Mexican School’ – as were many of his post World War II colleagues. Lerma’s style evolved following exposure to the teachers and students of abstract expressionism and nearly his entire body of work embraces it and pays homage to dada and surrealism.
José Ramón Lerma has been making art for over six decades – and continues to work today – though he has mostly remained “under the radar.” For whatever reasons, it is not due to a lack of output, either in quantity or quality. José maintained his commitment to making art and survived through hard times and good times. In addition to painting Lerma has done assemblage, collage, constructions, drawings and made prints. His work has been in several gallery and museum shows since 1955.
