Surrey, UK - The Esher Hall Antiques and Fine Art Fair returns to Esher Hall, Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher, Surrey from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th of October 2009. This boutique-style antiques fair was hailed as a great success on its debut visit to Esher Hall back in April 2008 and October’s show promises to be every bit as appealing. The timing of the fair coincides with people seeking to put their savings and investments into tangible assets to enjoy, rather than leave them to the uncertainty of the more traditional investments.

Some 40 exhibitors, all members of either the British Antiques Dealers’ Association or LAPADA, the UK’s largest association of professional art and antiques dealers, will be offering carefully chosen examples of top quality furniture, sculpture, contemporary and traditional paintings, prints and original book illustrations, as well as the luxurious silver, jewellery, watches and clocks, historical and commemorative medals, objets d’art and oriental carpets and rugs.

The Esher Hall Antiques and Fine Art Fair is a quality event not to be missed, whether you are looking to find an amazing piece for the home or a unique gift for someone special. With prices starting around £100, there will be plenty of choice. Parking is free and there is a free crèche available for children up to the age of eight years on both Saturday and Sunday.

On the opening day, Commander John Morton Lee OBE RN is signing copies of his newly published ‘Thomas Bush Hardy RBA (1842-1897) – A Master Painter of Marine and Coastal Watercolours’, written in conjunction with David H. Kirby-Welch, published by the Antique Collectors Club. One of the best known marine watercolourists of the Victorian era, this magnificent hard-cover coffee table book has over 150 colour plates. Visitors will be able to purchase the book at a special fair price of £30 (RRP £35) on The Edenbridge Galleries stand. John Morton Lee even has some TB Hardy paintings for sale, including ‘Château d’Amboise, Loire’, famed for being the burial place of Leonardo da Vinci, which is featured in the book.

Sculpture includes ‘Lion au Serpent’, one of the most acclaimed bronzes signed and dated by the father of European wildlife sculptors, Antoine-Louis Barye from Garret & Hurst Sculpture. Neville Contemporary Art from Bordon in Hampshire has a ‘Pair of Moluccan Cockatoos’, an oil on panel by one of the UK’s leading contemporary bird artists David Ord Kerr Dip. RAS (b. 1951), as well as Surrey-based artist Duncan Palmar’s seascapes of north Cornwall, which proved very popular last year. Haynes Fine Art of Broadway is bringing photo-realist paintings by British artist Tony Karpinksi (b 1965), a sneak preview before an in-house exhibition of his work later in October.

For people looking to collect paintings of local subjects, Cambridge Fine Art is bringing ‘A Scene near Shere, Surrey’, 1855, an oil on canvas by the Guildford artist John Dearman, Basket top table clock by Moncreif London, c 1705, from Derval exhibiting with The Edenbridge Galleries. Dearman, and ‘A Lane near Addlestone, Surrey’, 1887, an oil by Kate Gilbert, a member of the Williams family and daughter of Arthur Gilbert Williams.

A wonderful opportunity to learn more about caring for antiques is provided the British Antique Furniture Restorers’ Association. BAFRA experts will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate some of the decorative techniques and specialist tools used when restoring antiques to their former glory, including a fluting jig, leather tooling for desk tops, clock and barometer repairs, oriental lacquer and japanning, gilding, French polishing and the use of Shellac.

Some highlights to look out for at the fair include a very rare pair of pretty early Victorian maple sofas (£11,000 the pair) from local furniture dealer Arkell Antiques of Dorking. From Oxfordshire, WR Harvey & Co (Antiques) Limited has an important set of four Hepplewhite period mahogany salon armchairs, c 1785, (£35,000). Exhibiting with The Edenbridge Galleries from Kent are O.F. Wilson with a beautiful English satinwood card table, c 1780, which was previously exhibited at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair and a Chippendale period tripod base occasional table with bird-cage and pie-crust top of the finest colour and quality, circa 1765, from Antiques Roadshow expert Lennox Cato. Amherst Antiques is bringing Tunbridge Ware, the specialist art of wooden mosaic from Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge in Kent, including a rare pair of bookends attributed to Edmund Nye with a gauge work view of Bayham Abbey and people in the foreground, c 1855. Amongst the rare silver and historic coins and medals, Sanda Lipton has a pair of shell-back silver tablespoons by Hester Bateman, London 1779, £680 the pair and an extremely fine official silver George II coronation medal, 1727, £360. Antiquarian horologist Derval has a Joseph Windmills longcase clock, 6’ 9” with 11” square dial and bird and flower marquetry, c 1690.

A stunning platinum watch, covered in at least 12 carats of baguette diamonds with 2 pear shaped diamonds on the flip-up cover, c 1950, is likely to be a show stopper on T Robert’s jewellery stand, priced at £20,000. Another covered watch, from Plaza, is an 18ct gold Omega watch on a flexible bracelet (£3,500). The face is hidden under a clasp set with a pink tourmaline surrounded by diamonds and rubies, c 1950. London Silver Vaults’ exhibitor Stephen Kalms Antiques has a limited edition solid gold inscribed goblet by A.E. Jones, which commemorates the landing on the moon in 1969.

Once again Surrey-based Global Tiger Patrol is the benefiting charity for the fair. Global Tiger Patrol has been working to conserve the highly endangered tiger in the wild for 20 years (www.globaltigerpatrol.org). To reflect the theme of the charity, dealers are being encouraged to bring any tiger-related artefacts. Books Illustrated has a contemporary watercolour on paper entitled ‘Tiger Tiger’ by Peter Malone (b 1955) which was painted for an Orion project in 2004, £1,250.
