IMAX Melbourne Museum to open "Van Gogh: Brush with Genius"

Melbourne, AU - Van Gogh: Brush with Genius, set to be released at IMAX Melbourne Museum on 13 August, 2009. Filmed entirely in 15/70mm film on location in France and the Netherlands, Van Gogh: Brush with Genius captures the breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary colours of Van Gogh’s most famous works with the stunning visual effects of IMAX technology. From the dazzling yellow of the artist’s famous cornfields to the deep blue of his famous night sky, audiences will learn the story behind of some of the most important works in art history.
Created by Peter Knapp and Francois Bertrand with the cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum, the Musee d’Orsay and the Kröller-Müller Museum, Van Gogh: Brush with Genius traces the artist’s remarkable story from his first paintings at the age of 27 to the masterpieces he produced prior to his tragic death ten years later. Based on more than 900 of Van Gogh’s letters, the film takes you on an emotional rollercoaster through the life and work of this troubled genius and highlights both his immense joy and pain.
“Van Gogh: Brush with Genius will be nothing short of spectacular on the IMAX screen, bringing to life every brush stroke of Van Gogh’s stunning paintings,” says Richard Morrison, Manager, IMAX Melbourne Museum. “Van Gogh: Brush with Genius uses the full force of the IMAX theatre experience to create a deeply personal portrait of the artist that will intensify viewers’ admiration for his work,” said director Francois Bertrand. “Audiences will discover aspects of Van Gogh they never knew before while they appreciate a new the stunning landscapes and vibrant colours that give his work their strength and beauty. We are honoured to be the first to bring the energy and vitality of Van Gogh’s art to IMAX theatres.”
Van Gogh: Brush with Genius leads viewers on a journey through the tragically short but wildly prolific10 years during which Van Gogh created more than 700 paintings. Travelling in the artist’s footsteps from the Neverlands to Auvers-sur-Oise, and passing through Arles, Saint-Rémy and Paris, the story is told from the perspectives of three main characters: Ellen, a museum researcher; Peter, a film director; and Vincent Van Gogh himself.
Van Gogh: Brush with Genius is a co-production of Caméra Lucida and La Géode. The film’s artistic director is Peter Knapp. The film is directed and produced by Francois Bertrand; director of photography is Vincent Mathias; music is composed by Armand Amar.
