Born in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1930, Bryan Kneale studied painting at Douglas School of Art and then at the RA Schools from 1948 – 52. In 1960 he moved to sculpture and spent most of his teaching career at the Royal College of Art, he became professor of sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools from 1980-87. His works have been exhibited in solo shows at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, the Serpentine Gallery and across the world. He was elected Royal Academician in 1974. Bryan Kneale’s Triton III is the latest installation in the RA’s programme of Sculpture in the Courtyard and follows on from Sir Anthony Caro’s Promenade, the Chapman’s The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth, but not the Mineral Rights, Anselm Kiefer’s Jericho, Rodin's Gates of Hell and Damien Hirst's Virgin Mother.
