PULSE Miami to feature Walk-In Sculpture, Tekrar Level Four, by David M. Abir

MIAMI, FL.- David M. Abir sculpts light and sound in large-scale, self contained environments, creating work that oscillates between the physical and the spiritual. Entering one of his sculptures is cathartic - there is no end or beginning, just now. Tekrar Level Four, on view at PULSE Miami from December 3 through 6, 2009, is a walk-in sculpture where collaged classical music and defused light combine to generate a timeless, visceral response. Tekrar is a Farsi word meaning repetition - this partly refers to the artist’s ongoing process of collage and manipulation as well as the recurrent nature of meditation and life cycles.

The idiosyncratic architectural space of Tekrar Level Four is designed to emulate the anatomical structure of the human ear. The sound consists of a composition built from a selection of musical phrases, which are developed and played in continuous variations and repeated at random. The arbitrary intertwining of sound waves coupled with the subtle changes in lighting triggers an extraordinary multi-sensorial experience.

The result is both unusual and hypnotic: the changes and variations in the continuous succession of musical phrases occur at the same slow pace as the lighting, in this area which has been specifically designed so that the sound experience manages to distort our very perception and concept of repetition (tekrar), eventually making us question our own senses. - Octavio Zaya

David Marcus Abir is an Iranian-American sculptor. The first iteration of Tekrar was commissioned in 2005 for a group show in San Sebastian, curated by Octavia Zaya. The sculpture was then further refined in 2007 when exhibited at the Aldridge Museum of Contemporary Art. Tekrar Level Four (2009) represents the final form of the piece. In addition to his own work, David has also produced music and sound installations in collaboration with several artists, including Doug Aitken, Alfredo Jaar, Shirin Neshat, and Shahzia Sikandir. He lives and works in New York.

The series will feature daily performances and concerts by young emerging artists such as Maria Jose Arjona, who recently collaborated with Marina Abramovic, and whose daily performances will be among the highlights of the new programming. Notable musical talents, including The Vivian Girls, The Blow, and Exene Cervenka, will constitute some of PULSE Performance’s other highlights.
