MEMPHIS, TN.- Dixon Gallery and Gardens presents "Lichtenstein in Process", an exhibition of collages, drawings and sketches offering an intimate look into pop art icon Roy Lichtenstein’s artistic process. Though Lichtenstein’s finished works achieve a polished, graphic style, "Lichtenstein in Process" proves this polish came after a series of carefully articulated preliminary compositions. “Everything is in the drawings,” Lichtenstein has said. Almost every work in the exhibition served as a study for a future painting, print, or sculpture. On view through 17 January, 2010.
In these pieces you see Roy Lichtenstein’s mind and wit at work, capturing subtle references to historical genres through the artist’s most prevalent theme, the inundation of pop culture onto society. The artworks range in reference from the comic book character Dagwood, to the iconic American Oval Office, to the artistic legend Picasso. These archetypal images show Lichtenstein’s ability to connect high and low themes through the creative process. Most importantly, the exhibition displays Lichtenstein’s marked talent of challenging the viewer to reconsider everyday images and the traditional notions of art and its production.
Roy Fox Lichtenstein (1923-1997) is internationally recognized as one of the leaders of the American Pop Art movement. He was born in New York and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts Degrees from Ohio State University. His work can be found in major museums and public and private collections across the globe.
"Lichtenstein in Process" is sponsored by the Dixon Life Member Society. This exhibition was organized by the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation and the Katonah Museum of Art in partnership with Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Visit : http://www.dixon.org/
