Survey Exhibition by Matthew Buckingham opens at Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA)

DENVER, CO.- Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver) opens a new survey exhibition featuring the work of conceptual artist Matthew Buckingham. Through the use of various media including film, photography, video, drawing and writing, Buckingham’s work investigates two main themes: history and time. Using these subjects, Buckingham evokes a personal connection or memory from the individual viewer. MCA Denver is pleased to present a major survey of many of his grippingly captivating projects; each that unfold a story and produce reflections on the past, present and future. On view 14 of October through 10 January, 2010.

The MCA Denver exhibition will include pieces that truly define the artist’s flawless approach to create and reflect on history including Celeritas, a cabinet that calculates the speed of light that it is illuminated by, resulting in contemplation of our relation to the intangible sources of light and speed that surround us, and The Six Grandfathers, Paha Sapa, in the Year 502,002 C.E., a timeline leading up to a photo of the eventual disappearance of the faces on Mount Rushmore. Other recent works have investigated the indigenous history of the Hudson River Valley; the creative destruction of the city of St. Louis; and the inception of the first English dictionary.

Matthew Buckingham lives and works in New York City. Born in 1963 and brought up in Iowa, Buckingham has recently been featured in solo shows at leading contemporary art institutions such as Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain, and P.S.1 in New York. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, received a BA from the University of Iowa in the renowned film production and film studies program, holds an MFA from Bard College and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. His work has been seen in one-person and group exhibitions around the world, including at ARC / Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; Camden Arts Centre, London; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He was a 2003 recipient of the DAAD Artist in Berlin Fellowship.

He has also been the recipient of grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Danish Film Institute. In 2004, he was awarded a Henry and Natalie Freund Teaching Fellowship at the Washington University School of Art, St. Louis, Missouri. He also serves as an external tutor at the Art Academy in Malmö, Sweden.

This exhibition has been curated for MCA Denver by John Grant, former Deputy Director of the museum. Grant has been following Matthew's work over the last 25 years and is captivated by the artist's ability to re-frame common perceptions of history, individuals and our place in time.
