    The ICA's Story
The ICA encourages creativity by presenting and interpreting thought-provoking contemporary art to a diverse audience. The ICA was founded in 1980 by a group of local artists who were interested in creating a venue to exhibit contemporary art. At that time, there were a small number of non-profit organizations in downtown San Jose that showcased the work of local artists. However, they were primarily artist run galleries. The ICA distinguished its exhibition program by hiring a professional curator to lead the organization and the gallery quickly gained a reputation for curatorial excellence. That remains true 28 years later.

Today the ICA is an energetic art space committed to promoting creativity among our artists and our audience. We present exhibitions in our three galleries that include the most current, relevant and often challenging art from the region, the nation and the world. The space is activated by opening receptions, South First Friday gallery walks, nighttime projections in the front windows, panel discussions, printmaking workshops, brown bag lunches and impromptu conversations in the galleries.
