Miami, FL.- “I Was There”, a photographic exhibition by four Spanish artists is currently on view at Kavachnina Contemporary. The photographers, David Palacin, Pepe Moran, Rafaela Rodriguez and Estela Garcia were selected by Salustiano, the curator for this photo exhibition. Salustiano, a Spanish artist known widely by his portraits painted in a technically perfect red which look more like velvet than a canvas, is a master that shows his subjects in enigmatic acts of looking. "I Was There" is on view through August 1st.
Salustiano, who has a Specialization on Painting on Fine Arts from University of Seville, first entered the American market in 2004 with a solo show at Janos Gat Gallery in Manhattan. In the last decade, he has participated with a long standing presence, seducing viewers with his paintings in the most prestigious international art fairs, from Moscow, to Seoul, to London and Miami. “Initially, the idea was to do a photo exhibit on portraiture but then to widen the possibilities for artists when making their proposals, I suggested instead to work on the human being itself, on its figure, its presence and its absence throughout time,” said Salustiano. “Human beings have left a trace both, in the landscapes as being themselves, and with their fingerprints throughout time, which have been recorded in our memories or even as a witness of our living experiences and hence the title for this exhibition,” added Salustiano. Rafaela Rodriguez was born in Palma del Rio, Cordoba. She has been a Sevilla resident for the last 35 years. In her photographs, Rodriguez shows how the stillness of dawn pervades the rivers and waters she uses to recreate a serene and peaceful atmosphere with those earthly elements.
Pepe Moran, an experienced photographer who first exhibited in Sevilla in 1998, has had a long career in the advertising industry, photographing famous people, cities and architectural buildings throughout Spain. Moran, has participated in the multi-media traveling exhibition, 'The Missing Peace, Artists Consider the Dalai Lama', in Miami, Madrid and Tokyo during 2009. In his photographs titled “Semillas” or “Seeds,” Moran exhibits 6 photos that show the human figure in contorted forms in a black background as if they were floating or falling down in a weightless motion. “Science now explains that life was brought into this planet through meteorites which carried the seeds of life from the exterior space,” said Moran. "Life on earth is explained in this work as an interaction between mythology and science a symbiosis that brings forth poetry; in any case, I see life at the moment that precipitates, that falls down on our good old earth,” said Moran. David Palacin's photographs titled “Yo Estuve alli,” or “I Was There” narrate the memories of an early winter morning in a desolate place where distinct men reveal their presence through their contemplative eyes demonstrating what the artist says is a single powerful word: humanity. Estela Garcia's series of photographs are carefully crafted using materials and objects to create a new invented moment or people. Garcia uses the old school technique processing negatives (6 x 7 cm.) and applying color by hand. Then, she adds the positive image on paper color creating a stunning balanced effect.
