Portland, OR.- The Camerawork Gallery is proud to present "Andrzej Maciejewski: Garden of Eden" on view at the gallery from August 20th through September 23rd. "Garden of Eden" is a series of still-life photographs of fruits and vegetables. They are inspired by the Old Masters paintings, but they show our modern fruits from supermarkets. It's an example of the difference between the stereotype created by our culture and reality created by our civilization. The photographs were taken using large format Sinar view camera on 4x5 inch colour transparencies. The artist used tungsten lighting, which helped him to re-create the atmosphere of the old paintings.
Carefully arranged sets, which had been based on the extensive research on art history, are not simply the reproductions of the originals. The intention of the photographer was rather to reproduce their spirit and style. Someone with relevant background may enjoy trying to trace which photographs were inspired by particular artists, like Luis Melendez, Caravaggio or some of the Dutch Masters.
"Garden of Eden" was shortlisted in the still-life category of Sony World Photo Awards 2011 and published in several magazines. Early this year, photographs from it were presented at the group exhibitions in London, UK (Sony World Photography Festival) and New York, USA (Art for change: Faces of Economy). In September/October 2011 they will be part of the Backlight Photography Festival in Tampere, Finland. On this occassion Andrzej Maciejewski will also give a public lecture and three-day workshop for the Tampere University students. The project is scheduled to be presented at numerous other shows, including Las Vegas Contemporary Art Centre, NV, USA; Dimbola Galleries and Photographic Museum, Isle of Wight, UK; Museu Bernardo, Portugal and several galleries in Poland. Andrzej Maciejewski was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1959. He studied photography in Poland and Czechoslovakia. In 1985 he moved to Canada. Until late 1990's he worked as a commercial photographer (landscape and architecture) in Toronto.
Then he decided to focus on his presonal art projects and he moved to rural Eastern Ontario, where he works and lives today. The most famous of his projects so far, was "After Notman", re-photographic project about Montreal, based on iconic 19th Century photographs by Notman Studio. It was widely appreciated as one of the finest examples of accurate re-photography. Andrzej Maciejewski published three books: "Bread" (1996), "Toronto Parks" (1997) and "After Notman" (2003). His works may be found in numerous public, private and corporate collections and have been exhibited in Canada, USA, UK, Germany, Poland and Uganda. He also teaches photography at Flemming College, Haiburton School of Arts (Ontario, Canada) and at workshops for schools, sponsored by Ontario Arts Council.
