Singapore.- The Singapore Tyler Print Institute is proud to present "BMW Young Asian Artists Series III" on view at the institute from November 12th through December 17th. The exhibition features rising stars: Genevieve Chua (Singapore), Lyra Garcellano (Philippines), R.E. Hartanto (Indonesia) led by Chief Curator, Heman Chong (artist from BMW YAAS first series), in collaboration with co-curators, Joselina Cruz and Agung Jenong. Started in 2005, this programme identifies and enables young and promising Asian artists to make their mark. Each artist spent two weeks working alongside STPI’s workshop team exploring new ideas and print techniques to create fresh, innovative and cutting-edge works.
Genevieve Chua researches the fear of the unknown. This process involves the appropriation of Southeast Asian horror towards new narratives, and these new stories are often realised in multi-disciplinary forms. A recipient of the NAC Georgette Scholarship, Chua graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts in 2004 and furthered her artistic development at residencies in The Banff Centre, Canada and Singapore Tyler Print Institute. In Spring 2011, her 'After the Flood' Series was featured at Sotheby's Hong Kong in a dedicated section for photography and new media works. Chua’s exhibitions include Adinandra Belukar at the Singapore Biennale 2011, Child and the Beast at Objectifs (Singapore, 2011), Raised as a Pack of Wolves at the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (2009), Full Moon and Foxes at the Atelier, National Museum of Singapore (2009) and CUT 2009: Figure, New Photography from Southeast Asia (Kuala Lumpur; Singapore 2009). Lyra Garcellano graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Ateneo de Manila University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Studio Arts, from the University of the Philippines.
Living and working in Manila, Garcellano is a rising contemporary artist, well known as the creator and illustrator of the comic strip Atomo and Weboy. Garcellano has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions, including the Gwanju Biennale and the Jakarta Biennale. With a grant received from the Asian Cultural Council in 2010, she participated in the artresidency programs of Location One and Point B Worklodge, both in New York City. In 2006, she was awarded the 13 Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and was selected to be the Artist-in-Residence under the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists in 2002, doing her residency in Yogyakarta. R.E. Hartanto studied in the Faculty of Arts and Design in the Bandung Institute of Technology, and in the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in the Netherlands. Currently living and working in Bandung, he is known for his provocative portraitures that narrate stories of contemporary socio-political issues prevalent in our society. Hartanto’s selected group exhibitions include Made in Indonesia at the Christian Hosp Gallery in Berlin (Germany, 2011), Indonesia Contemporary Drawing at the National Gallery in Jakarta (Indonesia, 2010) and Us and Them at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2008. He was also the recipient of the Juror’s Choice award at the Phillip Morris ASEAN Art Awards VI in 1999.
